Master of the Oceans – A cure against sectarianism
A decade ago, Marcus Bohm (the man behind Master Of The Ocean and 3rd Master SUPer of the event this year) set up a competition with a group of elite athletes to crown the world’s top waterman. Master of the Ocean, an annual competition holding in Cabaret (Dominican Republic) since 2007, is a challenge in a single discipline for the kitesurfing, windsurfing, surfing and/or SUP Master title, or among all of them for the title of the “Master of the Ocean”.
The spirit is to promote the diversity of all these watersports by leaving the choice to the riders of the either one that they find the most adapted to wave and wind conditions. A nice way to bring back a good spirit on water and ride in the most natural way. Elite watermen matched their skills and experience against the forces of nature as well as they have to get a good spirit on the water.
The rider must perform radical maneuvers in the critical section of a wave with speed, power and flow to maximize scoring potential. Another interesting point is a kitesurfing judging criteria (PKRA heads may read this…): the strapless maneuvers and speed accumulated with the wave’s power are much more appreciated and rewarded than the maneuvers with straps and speed accumulated by the wind’s power.
Luciano Gonzales wins once again this year the overall title “Master of the Ocean” and was finalist of the windsurfing and kitesurfing series.
Here’s a video of the 2010 edition and a short clip teasing the 2011 edition. Stay tuned for the 2011 video! In the meantime, love your neighbour even if he’s glued to a whishbone or a paddle!
