KSP Ponta Preta Cabe Verde 2011 – Day 2
Sal Island, Cape Verde — December 3, 2011: Keeping a close eye on Secrets (the secondary contest site) this morning, contest directors selected Ponta Preta as the most suitable location to commence the Ponta Preta Kite Surf Pro. Indeed, the world-famous break proved to be the best choice, although the inconsistent conditions left the contest largely in standby mode.
The competition got underway, however most of the day consisted of waiting for wind and/or waves to improve while many riders surfed the break during the downtime. Mid-day, Bastien Bollard (FRA/Underground) and Paulino Pereira (POR) faced the reigning Kite Surfing World Champion, Guilly Brandao (BRA), in Men’s Heat 1.
Scoring a 7.33 for his best wave and a 13.5 heat score, Brandao delivered the day’s top performance including a nice cover-up.
Men’s heat 2 was completed, but later withdrawn as agreed upon by riders and contest directors due to the inconsistent conditions. It will be re-run following men’s heat 8 when conditions permit.
As four o’clock approached, organizers postponed until tomorrow, as conditions never improved quite enough. Competitors then returned to their all-inclusive accommodations at the nearby Villaggi Bravo while the KSP staff headed back to the beautiful Melia Tortuga Beach hotel, just a short walk from Ponta Preta.
Tomorrow morning, event directors will re-assess conditions, making the first call at 8 a.m. via the live webstream (broadcasting on kspworldtour.com/live). The earliest possible start will be at 9 a.m. If you miss any of the action, it will all be archived heat by heat for your on-demand viewing pleasure.
