Smolder Integrating Borders – Brazil Expedition
After 1 day of running between stopovers and problems dispatching equipment, we finally arrived at the Smolder base at Rosa Beach in Imbituba. There, we met professional surfers Dunga Neto, Marcio Farney, Ruda Carvalho, Artur Silva, photographer and video maker Jocildo Andrade and Naira Oliveira, the winner of our campaign “I want to travel with Smolder”.
As soon as we arrived, we received the news that the conditions were very difficult, because a cold front had arrived heavily in Catarina coast. Since Farney has been living in the region for a few years, he gaves us several tips about the conditions that we would find and that towards north side we would have the options of Silveira beach, Ferrugem and to the south side have Ibiraquera and Farol of Santa Marta.
“I thought: we are in the place that has the largest number of perfect big waves per square meter, it will be a real adventure.” in the ecstasy of the moment.
The next day, we were doing a more thorough recognition of these beaches and concluded that the best option would be the Rosa South. Surf and Kitesurf sharing the same waves also with the same two whales who were playing in the outside, a perfect place for board sports.
The forecast said a tropical cyclone would arrive near the coast of Santa Catarina, leaving the sea messy and very cold weather with clouded skies.
We set our harness to the strong winds that blew without intermission in Ibiraquera beach, famous for kitesurfers worldwide.
During sailing the rain stopped and the wind began to change its direction, causing the team to change direction following further south on State Beach Village in Imbituba. We arrived when everyone was getting out of the water for lunch and we were lucky enough to surf waves only with friends while the whales gave their free concert for all who were there.
