The Dingle Peninsula, Ireland

The French F-One rider, Yves Baudoux sent us this report about his last kitesurfing trip around the Dingle Peninsula on the Irish west coast.

Yves gives some tips to find the best spots of the Peninsula in spring.

Early spring in Ireland has, for us (family and friends) been a ritual for fifteen years.

It is difficult to enumerate all the things that attract us to that country, probably the kindness and hospitality of the inhabitants, the landscapes, their waves, their pubs, their depressions, the Guinness …

Our favorite corner is the Dingle Peninsula.

Ireland gets our vote because it counts many good points such as the breathtaking scenery, the sparse crowds As for the surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing conditions, they are just great, with so many side-off spots.

You should know that at this time of year, you will never see many riders in the water and you could be alone with pals to share world class waves. What else!?

My favorite spots and orientations:

GOWLANE
In southwest: the wind blows between two mountains (Connor pass)
East winds blow on this spot perfectly side-off (admittedly very gusty) on perfect long lefts. The view is just beautiful.
If it’s too big, you will go to Kilcummin, down south, wiser, but equally great.

INCH
In north winds (consistent sea breeze when sunny). The wind also comes through a passage between two mountains, perfectly side-off.
The sailing conditions can be perfect near the mountain. The wave is glassy and do not forget that this wave is probably one of the longest in Ireland.

MOSSIES

In north winds there is a wave on a rocky plateau working with mid and high tide, and that can be very generous! You can finish it in slalom between rocky heads at low tide.
But always easy even at high tide when it’s big because there is always a way to go out.

DUMPS (MAHERABEG CUT): in southeast winds (less regular) or northeast (always side-off): This spot has multiple breaks, sometimes easy, sometimes serious, depending on the tide.

Dumps and Mossies also work sideshore in northwest wind.

Of course, each of these spots is never far from a good pub! Just in front of Mossies you’ll find a key one, The Spillane.

When departure time comes, I usually get the same strange feeling, that sensation to leave something behind … and that compels us to return there again and again.

How to get there from France :

CROSSING
Roskoff / Cork: every Friday night and every late Saturday afternoon.

Cherbourg / Rosslare: cheaper with more crossings.
